Position Description

Job Location:            Burrillville/Foster/Glocester/Scituate Police Departments and Sojourner House’s                        Northern Rhode Island location

Hours:                 Full Time, Monday through Friday, including one late evening

Salary:                 $19 to $21 an hour, depending on experience.  As a full-time position, this position will provide health/dental insurance, a 401(k) plan, earned time off, paid holidays, and an Employee Assistance Plan (EAP).               

Sojourner House(www.sojournerri.org)  is a comprehensive domestic violence and sexual assault services agency that provides residential services, including shelter, transitional housing, and permanent supportive housing; and community based services, including advocacy, support groups, immigration advocacy, prevention education, and HIV testing and education to all victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.

BASIC FUNCTION: The Law Enforcement Advocate (LEA) will provide advocacy, crisis intervention, and supportive services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking in the Burrillville, Foster, Glocester, and Scituate communities, in coordination with those local police departments.  The LEA will also help to conduct outreach in northern Rhode Island, assist with the 24/7 victim hotline, and coordinate shelter and emergency housing placements to victims at Sojourner House’s locations in northern Rhode Island.

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES:

Provide one-on-one support, crisis intervention, information, and referrals to victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in the Burrillville, Foster, Glocester, and Scituate communities.

Provide follow-up on all domestic violence and sexual assault cases reported to Burrillville, Foster, Glocester, and Scituate police departments.

Accompany and support victims during their statement to police, at court, and at the hospital.

Provide expertise, support, and assistance to law enforcement and other professionals on domestic violence and sexual assault issues

Develop, coordinate, and conduct trainings and presentations on domestic violence and sexual assault to law enforcement, social service providers, other professionals, and community members.

Provide individual and/or group advocacy and assistance to Safe House and emergency housing clients as needed.

Provide assistance to clients seeking shelter and/or housing placements.  Provide information about such placements, and make directed referrals when appropriate.

Provide assistance with answering Sojourner House’s 24/7 hotline.  Provide occasional hotline coverage on evenings and weekends.

Complete data entry and submit necessary reports as required for grant compliance.

Conduct outreach to the community about Sojourner House’s services.

Stay abreast of resources and options available to victims by building and maintaining relationships with social service agencies throughout the state.

Support Sojourner House’s philosophy of client empowerment and respect for individual choices.

Assist with fundraising and awareness raising events.

Perform other duties as requested by Sojourner House management.

EDUCATION:       Bachelor’s Degree preferred

EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL SKILLS:  

A minimum of two to three years experience in human or social services
A demonstrated familiarity with domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and/or the criminal justice system
A demonstrated familiarity working with underserved populations and individuals from various cultural backgrounds
Computer literacy (Word, Excel, and general Internet skills)
Experience developing and delivering community presentations and speaking in public
Comfort working both individually and in teams
A demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize
Familiarity with social service providers and services in Rhode Island
Must possess a valid driver’s license and a reliable and insurance vehicle; and have the ability to travel to and from the various communities served
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including one evening per week and occasional weekends.  This position is full time (37.5 hours each week) with access to full employee benefits (health, dental, leave time, and a 401(k) plan)
Ability to speak Spanish or a language in addition to English is preferred
Ability to periodically be on-call for off-hours emergency calls and situations
