SUMMARY:HIV Endorsement Training for CHWs
DESCRIPTION:*This training has been delayed from its original start date of 4/10* \n\n\n\nSCHEDULE – May 8- July 31\, 2024Wednesdays 9am-12pmVirtual over ZoomAttendance at all sessions is required. \n\n\n\n“I work with HIV positive women. This training made me feel more comfortable with my engagement skills.”– Katie Gonzalez\, CCHW\, CPRS \n\n\n\nThis entry level curriculum will provide specialized training for community health workers serving people living with\, at risk for\, and impacted by HIV/AIDS. It is open to certified CHWs who are fluent in English.  \n\n\n\nModules include: \n\n\n\n\nHIV Testing\, Antiretroviral Therapy\n\n\n\nClient Engagement and Motivational Interviewing\n\n\n\nSocial Determinants\, Special Populations & Stigma\n\n\n\nBehavioral Health (mental health\, substance use\, domestic violence\, grief & loss)\n\n\n\nCultural Humility and Advocacy\n\n\n\nHIV Public Health Policies\n\n\n\nEthics\, Professional Burnout/Stress\, Self-Awareness and Self-Care\n\n\n\n\nThis 45 hour virtual training takes place over 12 weeks\, with 36 hours live class time over zoom and nine hours of homework. This qualifies graduates to apply for RI Certification Board’s Specialty Endorsement in HIV.  Applicants must hold a current\, valid and in good standing credential through RICB (like a CHW Certification) or a health care practitioner certification/license. \n\n\n\nThe development of this curriculum was made possible with Co-Exist funding through the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (OHHS)\, Ryan White Division. SUMMARY:Interpersonal Violence Training for CHWs
DESCRIPTION:Interpersonal Violence Training for CHWsMay 8\, 15\, 22\, 29 & June 5\, 2024Wednesday evenings\, 6-9pmIn-person at Rhode Island College plus 15 hours of self-paced assignments \n\n\n\nDo you feel prepared to support a victim of interpersonal violence after disclosure? Do you know the best trauma-informed practices? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis 30 hour training will aid community health workers in addressing interpersonal violence experienced by clients and help them to access community resources. This course will prepare community health workers with the skills needed to be a victim service advocate. Lisa Hoopis\, Director of Education and Training at Sojourner House\, will instruct. \n\n\n\nTraining includes information on: \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDomestic violence\n\n\n\nSexual assault\n\n\n\nHuman trafficking\n\n\n\nBoundaries\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrauma-informed care\n\n\n\nSafety planning\n\n\n\nCrisis intervention\n\n\n\nAnd more\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTraining will include guest speakers\, videos\, case studies\, group work\, and role plays. Fifteen hours will be in person at Rhode Island College and 15 hours will be synchronous. Lisa has taught in various departments\, as an adjunct faculty at Rhode Island College since 2014.  \n\n\n\nLisa is a former undergraduate and graduate student at Rhode Island College and is the former Director of the RIC Women’s Center. Lisa is currently a doctoral student at Johnson and Wales in Educational Leadership. Lisa works closely with school districts and agencies to provide professional and youth development\, training\, consultations\, curriculum development\, and assistance in setting up peer education and advocacy programs.  \n\n\n\nShe is a co-founder and active member of the RI HIV STI prevention coalition and an active member of the RI Cross Campus Collaborative to prevent sexual assault on campus. Lisa is a certified curriculum developer\, trainer\, and evaluator for the VAWA police academy and is co-chair of the RI crime victim service providers. This training is for Rhode Island certified CHWs only (or those currently in the process of applying). \n\n\n\nCommunity Health Workers will: \n\n\n\n\nAcquire a deeper understanding of the areas of public health and relationships between health of individuals\, organized entities\, and systems.\n\n\n\nGain the skills necessary to advocate for systems-level change towards improving public health in RI.\n\n\n\nHave a working knowledge of RI Public Health infrastructure and how the CHW role fits into it.\n\n\n\nUnderstand career/educational options in public health and the skills and educational opportunities necessary to advance and be successfully employed in these areas.\n\n\n\nUnderstand how individuals are impacted from systemic racism and social determinants of health; where they live\, learn\, work and play.\n\n\n\n\nTraining Modules Include: \n\n\n\n\nThe CHW Role in Public Health\n\n\n\nThe Impact of Place on Health\n\n\n\nEssential Skills and Knowledge Base (two modules)\n\n\n\nPublic Health Policy\n\n\n\nRI Public Health Infrastructure\n\n\n\nCHW Careers in Public Health\n\n\n\nUsing Case Study (or\, Storytelling)\n\n\n\nFinal Presentations & Debrief\n\n\n\n\nEarn 30 hours towards your CHW Certification! \n\n\n\nThe virtual Public Health Training will host Zoom classes on Thursdays\, 5:30pm – 8:30pm\, May 23 – July 25\, with an in-person final class at Rhode Island College on that final Thursday the 25th. (NOTE: there will be an assignment due before class begins — what we call “pre-work” — on May 23rd. This will be emailed to you the week before.) \n\n\n\nThere will be 23 hours of in-class time and approximately 7 hours of assignments to be completed in non-class time.
