Background
The Nonviolence Institute (NVI) seeks to teach by word and example the principles and practices of nonviolence, and to foster a community that addresses potentially violent situations with nonviolent solutions. Through a combination of street outreach, advocacy, education, and trauma-informed support, NVI works directly with individuals and families affected by violence in Rhode Island. Our Victim Services Team plays a critical role in supporting victims in the aftermath of trauma with dignity, compassion, and healing.
Position Summary
The Victim Advocate provides trauma-informed, culturally competent support to individuals and families impacted by violence. This includes immediate crisis response, case management, court advocacy, and coordination of healing services. The ideal candidate will be empathetic, organized, and deeply committed to community healing and nonviolence.
Key Responsibilities
Crisis Response & Advocacy
– Provide immediate trauma support following shootings, stabbings, assaults, and
homicides.
– Assist victims and families with safety planning, emergency services, and victim
compensation.
– Offer emotional support during funerals, vigils, hospital visits, and court proceedings.
Case Management & Support Services
– Maintain ongoing contact with victims and families, providing compassionate advocacy
throughout their healing process.
– Connect clients with wraparound services including housing, counseling, financial
assistance, and legal support.
– Develop individualized service plans in collaboration with each client.
Collaboration & Outreach
– Work closely with law enforcement, hospitals, and community partners to ensure timely
and effective support.
– Participate in community events, healing circles, and outreach activities.
– Coordinate with internal departments to offer holistic support.
Documentation & Reporting
– Keep accurate records of all interactions and services using case management software.
– Assist with reporting and tracking outcomes for grants and program evaluation.
– Participate in on-call rotation and emergency response coordination.
Other Responsibilities
-Performs other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational needs.
Qualifications
– Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Human Services, or
equivalent lived/professional experience.
– 2+ years of experience in advocacy, crisis response, or community-based support
preferred.
– Bilingual (English/Spanish or another community language) strongly preferred.
– Deep understanding of trauma, systemic inequity, and violence prevention.
– Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
– Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
– Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
– Commitment to the principles and practices of nonviolence.

This position is based in the community and at the Nonviolence Institute office. Candidates must
be comfortable working in a fast-paced, emotionally intense environment and committed to
upholding a culture of respect, healing, and transformation.
