Virtual Lecture
Incarceration is a Determinant of Health
Presented by Heather Gaydos, MSW, Senior Project Director, Center for Health and Justice Transformation, and local subject matter expert in the field of reentry
Approximately one in three Rhode Islanders have a criminal record. Research indicates that a criminal record worsens health outcomes, creates barriers to obtaining safe housing and employment, disrupts healthy family relationships, and places additional financial burdens on people who are likely to have limited or no income. This presentation will help attendees understand why incarceration is a social determinant of health.
Attendees will gain better understanding of:
- the criminal legal system and the history of mass criminalization in the US
- how incarceration is a social determinant of health
- how to advocate for and support clients who are navigating the collateral consequences of criminal legal system involvement.
Location: This lecture will be provided through Zoom. The link and sign in information will be provided prior to the lecture.
