Older Adults & Dementia Care Training

Office of Health Aging Presents: Community Health Worker Older Adult Training
This training targets individuals who are certified as CHWs or are working toward CHW certification. Please join us for this specialized training for Community Health Workers who are interested in serving older adults in the state of RI.
This training is supported by the Rhode Island Office of Healthy Aging with ARPA funding from the U.S. Health and Human Services’ Administration for Community Living.
All participants who successfully complete the full training will receive a $350 stipend and RI College certificate of completion. The training is provided by RI College and includes:
- Building Holistic Relationship with Older Adults (35-hours) a RICB Specialization
- Dementia Competent Practice: Promoting Dignity & Person-Centered Care (5-hours).
The training will be delivered over a six-week period: 5 in-person session and 1 online session. The in-person sessions will be held at RI College’s Alger Hall, room 107 (morning and lunch refreshments will be provided). Classes will meet on Saturdays from 9am – 3pm (see the schedule below):
- August 24, 2024 9am – 3pm in-person
- August 31, 2024 and September 7, 2024 no in-person classes; participants complete online work •
- September 14, 2024 9am – 3pm in-person
- September 21, 2024 9am – 3pm in-person
- September 28, 2024 9am – 3pm in-person
- October 5, 2024 9am – 3pm in-person
Upon completing the training, participants will increase their understanding of:
- Community Health Workers (CHWs), Aging & the Workforce
- Sociological Contexts of Aging: Obstacles & Opportunities
- Practice Perspectives: Building Partnerships that Empower
- Social Determinants of Health & Aging: Obstacles & Opportunities
- Threats to Healthy Aging: Behavioral Health Challenges & Dementia (5-hours)
- Healthy Aging
- Empowering Partnerships & Resource Navigation
In support of building the CHW Workforce in the field of aging, this training program will support applications and fees for certifications for Community Health Worker and Older Adults Specialization.
