GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Sexual Assault Victim Advocate provides a vital and urgently needed
service for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in Rhode Island. With the Assistance
of an advocate, victims feel supported and empowered to continue with the rest of the criminal
justice process. Additionally, victims have access to services that are specific to their needs and
can assist them with the healing process. Victims who feel supported and are receiving services
geared towards holding more offenders accountable for their actions.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsibilities will include working directly with victims of domestic violence, sexual
    assault and stalking, providing follow-up advocacy, safety planning, support, shelter
    referrals.
  • Provides in-person support to victims at local hospitals with or without police.
  • Provides in-person support to victims at police departments
  • Provides in-person support to victims at court for hearings and restraining order issues.
  • Provide training, outreach and relationship building with various community
    organizations and agencies in our community.
  • Maintain data and providing program reports.
  • Should conduct a minimum of two outreach and training activities a month whenever
    possible.
  • Provides a positive, professional and enthusiastic image of the agency to the community
    at large. Upholds agency policies and procedures.
  • Acts in a way that demonstrates cultural competency and value diversity.
  • SKILLS:
  • A high level of interpersonal skills to provide assistance to victims and to deal effectively
    with all segments of the community.
  • Applicants must have crisis intervention experience, excellent interpersonal and
    computer skills.
  • The ability to deal effectively in stressful situations and to handle crisis as they arise.
  • The ability to be organized, dynamic and a team player.

  • ONGOING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES:
  • Attend advocate in-services< recommended at least twice a year.
  • Agency staff should include advocates in all notifications for any applicable
    training/conference etc.
  • If funding available for national conferences, we encourage participation with approval
    from their supervisor.
  • Attend peer support
  • Attend supervision with their supervisor to discuss case review and any program issues.
  • Attend the VAWA Curriculum Committee Instructor Development course when offered.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Works in a typical office and/or virtual environment at Day One
  • Travel within state responding to hospitals, courts or Police Departments
  • Work requires flexible hours
  • Completion of next 30-hour volunteer training for victims of crime helpline
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, however combination of education and experience will be
    considered.
  • Three years direct experience in sexual and domestic abuse preferred
  • Familiarity with data bases, spreadsheets and word processing.
  • valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Spanish speaking required
