The Brain Injury Association of Rhode Island (BIARI) is Rhode Island’s only 501(c)(3) non-profit agency dedicated solely to increasing awareness of brain injury and its consequences, providing education to prevent brain injury and enhancing the quality of life for those affected by brain injury. 

The Brain Injury Association of Rhode Island (BIARI) offers a comprehensive lending resource library, facilitates support groups, conducts screenings, and provides educational trainings. Additionally, BIARI actively engages in state and federal advocacy efforts and assists individuals with both traumatic and acquired brain injuries in accessing critical information to make informed decisions about available services and supports.

Job Summary:

BIARI is seeking a part-time bilingual Community Health Worker (CHW) to collaborate with the resource facilitation team in engaging underserved populations across the state. Key responsibilities include facilitating newly developed support groups, assisting resource facilitation staff with research and outreach initiatives, contributing to the development of educational materials, conducting senior safety awareness trainings, and providing in-house translation support as needed.

Compensation and Scheduling:

Pay Range: $22–$25 per hour, commensurate with experience

BIARI is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team in a very flexible, part-time role requiring 15–20 hours per week. This position offers a competitive hourly rate based on experience and is perfect for professionals seeking work-life balance, parents looking for hours during the school day, or those interested in supplementing a second-shift job.

Essential Functions:

  • Facilitate Support Groups: BIARI seeks to expand its current support group offerings by establishing three new statewide groups. One of these groups will be exclusively for Spanish-speaking individuals, with a focus on serving Rhode Islanders aged 60 and older living with brain injuries. The CHW role would include the coordination/facilitation of these newly formed groups.
  • Resource Facilitation: BIARI employs two staff resource facilitators, CHW would support their efforts by offering translation services, conducting client follow-ups, and assisting with research and referrals as required.
  • Senior Safety Awareness Training: The CHW will support grant-funded initiatives in collaboration with the Office of Healthy Aging by conducting in-home and community-based safety assessments for Rhode Island’s senior (60+) brain injury population.
  • Outreach: The CHW will play a key role in extending outreach efforts to previously underserved areas of the state, ensuring equitable access to BIARI’s services and supports for individuals of all ages, ethnicities, races, orientations, and disabling conditions.
  • Translation: The CHW will be responsible for providing Spanish language translation and interpretation support as needed, both during client meetings and in the development of educational and informational materials.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish, including speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact professionally with a diverse range of stakeholders, including clients, professionals, and community partners.
  • Ability to conduct outreach and engage with underserved populations across Rhode Island, promoting equitable access to BIARI’s services and supports.
  • Applicant must have reliable transportation and the willingness to travel throughout the state, as needed.
  • Openness to conducting in-home and community-based safety assessments for older adults with brain injuries.
  • Technical proficiency, to include the Microsoft Suite (Word, Excell, Power Point)
  • Comfortable presenting to groups, including consumers, stakeholders, and professionals.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience working with and providing support to individuals with disabilities or chronic health conditions preferred.
  • Certification as a Community Health Worker (CHW) is preferred; non-certified candidates must obtain certification within 18 months of hire.

East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP) is seeking a full-time, part-year, temporary Community Health Worker who will collaborate with Warren and Bristol Health Equity Zone (HEZ), East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP), community partners, and residents.

Responsibilities:

The Community Health Worker will provide outreach at community gathering places, events, local spaces, and high-traffic areas where people congregate. Increase collaboration with populations disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 by engaging local influencers to increase awareness, reduce social isolation, and strengthen social cohesion.

Guide individuals and families to practice positive, responsible health behaviors through emotional and social support, provide coaching and problem-solving strategies, and monitor and reinforce progress on health behavior goals. Support efforts to expand resources for those socially isolated through referrals to health, behavioral health, and social support services.

Build an inventory of local resources that will help to connect people to needed services and supports, and to identify service systems gaps and barriers.

May provide direct staffing support to EBCAP departments such as the food pantry and Family Center to meet identified populations where they are. Enter demographic and service data into EBCAP’s client database as assigned.

Qualifications:

This position requires a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. An associate degree in social science, research, public health-related field, or equivalent work experience in a similar field is preferred.

Certification through the RI Certification Board (RICB) as a Community Health Worker (CHW) OR requirements met to sit for the CHW certification exam within 12 months preferred.

Job Summary:

The Community Health Worker (CHW) is a trusted community member who provides senior citizens with culturally appropriate health education, outreach, and social support. Key Responsibilities:

Outreach and Education:

  • Conduct outreach activities to identify seniors in need of health services.

Case Management:

  • Participate in program evaluation and quality improvement activities.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A high school diploma or GED is required; an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in public health, social work, or a related field is preferred.
  • Certification: Community Health Worker certification preferred; if not Certified, successful applicant must earn certification within 18 months of hire date.
  • Experience: Prior experience in community outreach, case management, or healthcare services is strongly preferred. Familiarity with the community being served is essential.

Skills:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust with clients and community members.
  • Knowledge of local health and social service resources.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation and reporting.
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with case management software or databases.

  • Transportation: A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation may be required for outreach activities.

Overview
Under the direction of Conexion Latina Newport (CLN) in conjunction with the Newport Health Equity
Zone (HEZ), the Bilingual Community Health Worker/Healthcare Navigator (CHW) will work with the
Hispanic community on Aquidneck Island to create and foster access to all of their health needs and
assist in obtaining health insurance and/or financial assistance when necessary. They will also build and
foster relationships with local health and mental health organizations and all organizations that
contribute to overall health and wellness, to aid them in becoming more in-tuned and competent both
culturally and linguistically to the needs of the Hispanic community. The Bilingual Community Health
Worker will be required to participate in, and complete, the state Community Health Worker certification
program, which can be done while working, as well as the Healthcare Navigator certification provided by
Healthsource RI. This is a grant funded position for 40 hours a week, for a period of 1 year, with potential
for renewal depending on funding.

Essential Job Functions

  • Advocate for the needs of community and individuals to our program partners, local health providers and businesses
  • Create and maintain honest and effective relationships with community healthcare partners
  • Promote wellness by providing culturally appropriate health information to residents and community partners
  • Assist families in applying for healthcare insurance and/or financial support for healthcare needs
  • Plan, coordinate and implement community health events such as vaccination clinics, health fairs, workshops, etc.
  • Participate in community meetings, gatherings and events with community members to promote civic involvement and health & wellness
  • Work in the CLN office and provide support as needed by walk-in clients.
  • Use a holistic approach to understanding that all basic needs lead to health and wellness and all types of support provided will improve health outcomes.
  • Build individual capacity to achieve professional development. This will include:
    • Participation in and complete Community Health Worker Certification Course
    • Participating in regular meetings with supervisor
    • Participation in meetings with other community health agencies and partners
    • Participation in relevant RIDOH and HEZ workshops
    • Participation in regular Community Healthworker resource meetings
    • Participation in Healthcare Navigator Training
  • Keep CLN staff updated and in the loop about resources, community issues and new initiatives
  • Demonstrate progress through program assessment and evaluation
  • Work to eliminate barriers and advocate for systemic change through creating sustainable programs that actively engage resident voice and community partners
  • Bring inspirational presence, reliable leadership, and enthusiasm for CLN’s mission and vision to community meetings, task forces, and other strategic sites.
  • Complete monthly reporting requirements

  • Fully Bilingual English/Spanish required (speak, read, write)
  • A resident of the Aquidneck Island Hispanic community will be prioritized

On October 25th, 2024, Franyelys “Frannie” West, proudly pictured holding a bouquet, celebrated the grand opening of RI Support Network LLC at 48 Power Road in Pawtucket.

Franyelys West, a dynamic 27-year-old Latina entrepreneur from Rhode Island, has launched her first independent community health worker business, RI Support Network LLC. Through partnerships with local directors, state representatives, and attorneys, Franyelys has created a support network dedicated to empowering families with accessible health and legal resources.

Frannie shares her motivation, “RI Support Network was born from my vision to bridge gaps in our healthcare system with trusted, compassionate support. I believe everyone, regardless of background, deserves access to the resources they need for a healthier, more resilient life. Our mission is to uplift our community, ensuring every voice is heard and every need is met.”

RI Support Network LLC offers personalized services to help clients navigate healthcare, access social services, and find legal resources. Summary:

As a member of the prevention team, the Men’s Engagement Coordinator will play a vital role in supporting domestic violence prevention initiatives and executing the State Action Plan to Prevent Domestic Violence. This position involves planning and implementing activities that engage men as allies, including the Ten Men strategy—a statewide prevention initiative funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Additionally, the coordinator will provide support and technical assistance for the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) federal grant, funded through September 2025.

This role is dedicated to fostering and maintaining strong connections with Ten Men members and alumni, RICADV’s member agencies, organizational partners, and community groups. The coordinator will assist with strategies that enhance community involvement, such as outreach, training, events, and public awareness, with a focus on engaging men.

We encourage people with lived experience in addressing and challenging harmful masculinity norms and behaviors related to gender-based violence with their peers and communities to apply. Our ideal candidate is an individual who has experience fostering environments where men are actively engaged as allies in violence prevention efforts. The Men’s Engagement Coordinator works to advance men’s involvement in preventing violence for all people through gender norms transformation and engaging men and boys in gender-based violence advocacy efforts and movement building.

This is a full-time position based at RICADV’s office in Warwick, Rhode Island. The organization operates on a hybrid schedule, with employees working both remotely and in the office each week. Additionally, all employees contribute to supporting the administrative assistant by answering calls to the office, which may include calls from victims and survivors of domestic violence.

CHWARI Director Sarah Lawrence Starts New Career After 7 Devoted Years

It is with a grateful heart that I inform you I am resigning as Director of the Community Health Worker Association of Rhode Island. Throughout these past 7 years, I have been deeply inspired by community health workers’ compassion, professional dedication, and reverence for human dignity. You have shifted my own professional compass so much that I have taken a position as a therapist at Newport Mental Health. This will allow me to work close to home and serve my neighbors needing behavioral health support on Aquidneck Island.

CHWARI has a lot to be proud of. Building on the grassroots sown in 2009, the association has grown to include over 1800 subscribers to our newsletter and has supported the professional development of several hundred CHWs through training, certification, and leadership opportunities. Through our parent entity, the Institute for Education in Healthcare at Rhode Island College, we have attracted federal and state monies, CHWs from diverse workplaces, and workforce allies across the state to help fortify this invaluable workforce. I wish you all – CHWs and Allies – the best as you forge financial sustainability of this role, grounding CHW work in local community strengths and cultures, and being guided by CHWs’ lived expertise in surmounting barriers and thriving.

The Olneyville Neighborhood Association (ONA) is seeking its first Executive Director to lead our dynamic organization. We’re looking for someone with strong leadership skills, proven fundraising experience, and a passion for community organizing to help ONA continue its journey of growth and empowerment.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and plan community organizing efforts in line with ONA’s mission.
  • Work with the Board and staff to develop strategies that support ONA’s long-term growth and sustainability.
  • Collaborate with the Board to create and implement fundraising, marketing, and communications plans.
  • Manage grants and funding, including researching opportunities, preparing proposals, and ensuring reports are completed on time.
  • Prepare and manage the annual budget with Board oversight, and ensure the organization operates within it.
  • Build and maintain relationships with funders, donors, partners, and community leaders.
  • Representing  ONA in the community and with the media.
  • Oversee ONA’s programs and services, ensuring they are well-run, evaluated, and continually improved.
  • Supervise staff and volunteers, supporting their growth and contributions to ONA’s work.
  • Work with the Board and vendors to oversee day-to-day operations, including bookkeeping, HR, and facility.

Qualifications:

  • At least five years of nonprofit experience, including at least two years of supervisory experience
  • At least two years of community organizing experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, communications, or other relevant field, or equivalent additional experience
  • Commitment to ONA’s mission and connection to the Olneyville neighborhood; residence in Ward 6 or 15 strongly preferred
  • Bilingual in Spanish & English; K’iche’ a plus
  • Demonstrated history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results
  • Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community
  • Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, partner agencies, and volunteers; comfort level in building relationships with the organization’s client base
  • Deep commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and consciousness of how the employee’s own culture, race, and identity are located in and may impact this work
  • Understanding of nonprofit financial management and fiduciary and compliance responsibilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google suites and donor CRM systems
  • Availability to attend and travel to meetings and events outside of normal business hours; limited overnight travel.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: $55,000 – $65,000
  • PTO/Sick Days: 15 Days
  • Vacation Days: 15 Days after the probationary period
